    New Metropolitan Police Non-Emergency Telephone Number 0300 123 1212 (Updated @ 28-10-2008)

Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) : Two Crime Reporting Telephone Numbers

Two Recommended Source Web Links @ 24-10-2008 :

How To Report Crime :  http://www.met.police.uk/reporting_crime/

Two MPS Tel. Nos for Reporting Crime :  http://www.met.police.uk/campaigns/contact_number/index.htm

    Emergency

Unless it’s an emergency, call the Metropolitan Police Service on 0300 123 1212.  You now only need to know two numbers to contact the Metropolitan Police:

In an emergency always call 999.

An emergency is when a crime is happening, someone suspected of a crime is nearby, someone is injured, being threatened or in danger.

    For example:

If your house is being burgled (or the suspect is nearby) call 999

If your car is being stolen (or the suspect is nearby) call 999

Call 0300 123 1212 when you need to report crime that is not an emergency.

    For example:

If your house has been burgled call 0300 123 1212

If your car has been stolen call 0300 123 1212

This number has been introduced to make it simpler for you to contact the police and to help reduce the amount of inappropriate 999 calls. You can call it any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Local call charges apply from BT lines in London. Mobiles and other networks may vary.

You can also call 0300 123 1212 when you need to speak to your local police, seek advice on police matters or comment on the service you have received from the Metropolitan Police.

If you are deaf or have speech impairment you can use a textphone to call the police. Dial 18000 in an emergency, or 18001 if your call is not an emergencyThe MPS call operators have access to professional interpreters so they can quickly translate your call if you cannot, or have difficulty, speaking English.

Subject: RE: Request for Advice on Crime Reporting + 3 Missing Public Statutes at Surrey Water Public Open Space

    Hello Kam,

In answer to your query below. If a member of the public ran into any police officer having just been robbed then of course that officer would do everything to help that victim including reporting the crime. The 0300 number is not a new system, it is simply the new telephone number the Met have launched to replace the old number for reporting non urgent crimes.

If you need any further clarification then please call the team on 0208 6493588.

    Thanks

Subject: Southwark News' Urgent Request for a Photo of the remain of the "3 Missing Tree Statutes" at Surrey Water for Potential Publication on 30 October 2008 (Thursday)

    Dear Friends

Please note that I have just spoken with Gavriel (Gav) Hollander, Rotherhithe Reporter at Southwark News who has kindly offered us the opportunity to "Make News" and help "Fight Crime" at the same time.  Gav would very much like a photo of the remain of the "3 Tree Statutes" for a potential press report that he is working on and would be most grateful if someone can send a photo to him direct using the email address :  gav@southwarknews.org

If you wish to help, please send the photo to Gav by tomorrow, 28-10-2008 (Tuesday) at the latest for publication on Thursday, 30-10-2008.

Gav told me that he has already contacted Southwark Council to request for information including what he asked me about in his email below.

Gav's can be contacted on Southwark News' switchboard telephone number 020-7231-5258.

Kam's Request to Southwark News :  Can you please help publicise the new Met Police's London-wide non-urgent telephone number of 0300 123 1212 (Web Link for information :  http://www.met.police.uk/campaigns/contact_number/index.htm ) that is the new telephone number for all police stations in London.  Many thanks.

    All best wishes

    Kam

    Hi Kam

Do you have any details about the statues? How old they are, what they are made out of, who designed/built them etc?

    Thanks
    Gav

Surrey Docks Safer Neighbourhood Police Team :  Thank you for your advice email below of 24-10-2008 @ 11:11am  I will update the RCSF Website and help inform others about the new Met Police non urgent telephone number of 0300 123 1212 (Web Link for information :  http://www.met.police.uk/campaigns/contact_number/index.htm ).  Your email below of 24-10-2008 @ 11:11am seems to indicate that Safer Neighbourhood Police Teams do not deal with "Crime Reporting".  For example, if a community member ran into a  Safer Neighbourhood Police Team Member immediately after becoming a victim of robbery.  In such a case, would the Safer Neighbourhood Police Team Member help report the crime or would the victim have to call the new Met Police non urgent tel. number on 0300 123 1212?  I would be most grateful if you can help clarify my understanding.

Rotherhithe Safer Neighbourhood Police Team :  I have called and left a voicemail today at about 15:22 requesting for a "Crime Report Number" for the case.  I am trying to clarify my understanding of how crime reporting works via my request for advice message above but would appreciate any guidance that you may like to offer.

Lorraine :  Please see herewith some information on "Crime Reporting".

    Hi Kam,

I have forwarded your email onto Rotherhithe SNT who look after the Surrey Water area. If you, or any of your community members, need to report a crime then please call the Southwark non urgent number on 0300 123 1212. We check all crimes on our ward once they have been reported and follow up any as necessary.

    Thanks

Lorraine :  I think the 3 missing statues you have reported are most likely to have been stolen - possibly to be sold as scrapped metal!

Surrey Docks Safer Neighbourhood Police Team :  Can you please help investigate the report of 3 missing statutes as per Lorraine Smith's Email below.  Please let me have a "Crime Report (CAD) Number" for this "Crime Report" and keep me posted of any finding you may have.  Please find attached a photo of the 3 statutes for your record.

    All best wishes

    Dear Friends

Can anyone help me.  There were 3 statues mounted on concrete on the grass verge around Surrey Water.

They had the shoes and legs of little girls but the body of one was a tree trunk the other a fir tree and the third I can't remember.  When I passed by this morning all that was left were the three sets of shoes, it looks like the bodies have been cut off.

I  telephoned the Southwark News and asked them to investigate.  I have tried to contact the wardens (left a message) I didn't even try the council as the environmental centre have trouble understanding the most basic of queries.  It is impossible to get hold of anyone in the council who knows what you are talking about.  Probably manned by expensive agency staff.

Vandalism never seems to be chased up.

Metropolitan Police London Local Crime Mapping Website Launched @ 3-9-2008 + Press Reports + RCSF's User Guide

Local crime figures a click away - Mayor and Met Police launch Crime Mapping
(Source :  Greater London Authority (GLA) Press Release on 3-9-2008)

    Web Linkhttp://www.london.gov.uk/view_press_release.jsp?releaseid=18656

A new website which will enable Londoners to get crime figures for their neighbourhood was launched today by Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, Sir Paul Stephenson.

The new ‘crime mapping’ website means for the first time Londoners will be able to get information about crime levels in their neighbourhoods and access local crime prevention and safety advice.

The website provides a set of interactive maps, showing numbers and rates of crime, and links to other sites including Safer Neighbourhoods Team web pages. The site also compares the crime levels in local neighbourhoods to the London average.

The new crime mapping site went live on the Metropolitan police’s website today (Wednesday 3rd September) after a brief trial and testing period in August where feedback from the public informed the consultation process. Going forward, further crime categories will be added in a phased approach.

    Boris Johnson said:

“Crime mapping was one of my major manifesto commitments and an important part of our strategy to tackle the number one issue for Londoners, crime and safety.

“This new online service means that Londoners will, at long last, be able to get information about crime levels in their neighbourhood at the click of a button.

“Crime mapping puts information into the hands of every London citizen about the levels of crimes as well as contact details of their local police officers.

“This is a major step forward in enabling Londoners to really be able to assess the work of their local police in tackling the crimes that affect their neighbourhood.”

    Sir Paul Stephenson said:

“There has been a growing and understandable appetite for people to know more about what crime is happening in their local areas. We've deliberately made these new crime maps as easily accessible and user friendly as possible with the aim of increasing communication and trust between the public and the police.

"We've worked hard to get this right in a fairly tight timeframe and we are pleased that the Information Commissioner has in fact commended the design and delivery of the maps. Despite the timescale, effective public consultation is really important to the Met and this has been ongoing since August.

"Indeed, we have found that in some cases Londoners’ perception of crime is higher than the reality and the crime maps may help to reassure communities about the general safety of their local area."

    Kit Malthouse said:

“Boris promised crime maps for London during the election, and today we are delivering on that pledge."

“This new website will increase the visibility of what the police and local councils are actually doing to fight crime on the doorstep.  For the first time Londoners won't have to guess if crime in their area is a problem. They will be able to see for themselves where the issues are, and what crime-fighting measures are working.

‘The public deserve the truth on crime, and with this fantastic new tool, we hope they can join with us in driving ever better performance from their local police force and council."

    Ends.

    Notes to Editors

    1. The new crime mapping website can be found on: http://www.met.police.uk/
    2. Londoners will be able to ‘zoom in’ and ‘zoom out’ to examine crime levels within their chosen areas pan London, and at Borough, Ward and Sub-Ward levels.
    3. Crime mapping areas are based on pre-defined (‘sub ward’) areas consisting of an average of 633 households. There are 4,765 ‘sub wards in London.
    4. Crime rates are displayed both in colour coded (thematic) and numerical terms.
    5. The new crime mapping website shows areas where the crime rate is considerably higher than the average for London, above the average for London, straddling the average for London, below the average for London and considerably lower than the average for London.
    6. On 27th July 2008 the Mayor wrote to Jacqui Smith last month to invite the Home Office to share the expertise we have built up in London on our pioneering crime mapping programme.
    7. Neighbourhood Policing research shows that people who feel well informed about what is happening in their local neighbourhood are more likely to feel more confident in local policing, and to engage and work with police and partners to prevent crime.

"Crime Map Plots Course For Crime"

(Source The Docklands 24 Newspaper (Peninsular Edition) @ 10-9-2008 (Page 7))

A new mapping system which shows crime in your area has been launched – with worrying results for some Docklanders.

Mayor Boris Johnson and the Met Police have jointly launched the website, which pinpoints crimes to  roughly every six streets.

The new ‘crime mapping’ means Londoners will be able to get information about crime levels in their neighbourhoods – although only for burglary, robbery and vehicle crime.

Most Docklands areas are classed as having average crime rates, although in Royal Docks the level – in relation to numbers living there – is high.

Now there are fears the statistics will ‘ghettoise’ trouble hotspots and force house prices down.

Mayor Johnson responded: “I think the truth is far more important and valuable and by using this we will drive down crime and improve areas that are already ghettoised and under suspicion.

“This is a major step forward in enabling Londoners to really be able to assess the work of their local  police in tackling the crimes that affect their neighbourhood.”

The website could be extended to include other crimes, but police have no plans as yet to report clean-up figures.  Users can zoom in and out to examine crime levels within their chosen areas at borough, ward and sub-ward levels. Levels are shown in both number and colour form.

To find out your area’s crime levels, go to www.met.police.uk.
