Barry

Please see Val's kind email below and contact her direct if you still wish to request for her help with funding.

I have copied you on the RCSF Circular of 9-12-2006, which incorporated Val's email below, by sending it to your old email address and not sure if you have received it. Cllr. Anne Yates has picked up my email very quickly but the acknowledgement of receipt email as shown below is all that I have heard from her so far.

All best wishes

Kam

Dear Kam,

After I met Barry and Anne about the proposal for a youth club, I sent on some information and a form for the Bridges House Trust. But no one has come back to me for any further fundraising advice or help and I am sorry that the project seems to have hit problems locally. I really want to try and keep on good terms with everyone in Rotherhithe's community and will keep my door open for Barry, Anne, and anyone who would like me to try to assist with getting much needed youth facilites off the ground. I would certainly be happy to help a Young Friends of Stave Hill project, if I can be of use.

Best wishes

Valerie

Lisa,David,Paul,Jeff,Ann (our local councillors)

As you are probably aware Barry Duckett myself and others have been working hard to get the Rotherhithe Youth Club off the ground, but are finding it virtually impossible to get the money that is required to kick start this vitally important facility in our area.

We have been to so many meetings where youth provision has been spoken about but as always this is only paying lip service to the public!!! ... it is now time for you , our councillors, to stop talking and start delivering.

Lisa Rajan, has sat in on our meetings, and Ann Yates, has been very helpfull in trying to get this off the ground, but we the general public are now becomming increasingly angry about going "cap in hand" for funding with the help from people like Val Shawcross A.M.

Barry has met with Val today and explained that we only need about £22,000 to get this going for the year ahead. This is absolute peanuts for such an important provision for rotherhithe.

It is for you our councillors to lead from the front and make sure that the money is made available for the future of our kids!!!..

This seems to be the case with the Rotherhithe Festival as well. we are spending a lot of our precious time begging for money from virtually anyone, when other events are heavily subsidised by the council, This has not gone unoticed by the residents of Rotherhithe. This after all is the Rotherhithe Festival, but i dont see any effort or backing from our councillors except Ann Yates!!..

We should not have to beg developers such has ,Conrad Pheonix, and British Land, for money when we know that the council are sitting on millions of pounds of section 106 money going back over 12 years?

I have deliberately left one of the Rotherhithe Councillors out of the list above, knowing that he is against this type of youth provision in our area, therefore i will not waste my time with him.

Come on do something to make the people of Rotherhithe sit up and take notice!!!

Looking forward to your responses....

Richie

Thank you for all the positive news in your latest email below. Please give me advance notice of the date that CDEP will be holding a store at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre so that I can help to advertise the event.

I am grateful for your kind offer to help promote the RYC.  Since my resignation from RYC Project Board last Thursday, it will be wrong for me to conduct business on behalf of RYC without being specifically requested to do so.  I am copying this email to the RYC Project Board Members, etc. for their information and possible follow up actions.  Since RYC is at a very early stage of its development, my suggestion is to use the Youth Outreach Work opportunity next January to conduct more "Public Opinion Survey" that Kieren McIntosh & Michael Whelan have started last week by asking Local Young People (Age 11 to 21) what activities they want for themselves at RYC and if possible, get their contact details so that they can be personally informed when RYC starts to operate. I am keen to explore the opportunity of introducing "Karaoke Evenings" at RYC - which seems to complement very well with what Canada Estate Music Club / Rotherhithe School of Performing Art try to do in capitalising on the Local Youths' strong interest in music and performing art.  It can also provide a regular platform for discovering potential talents so that they can be better nurtured and helped.  Furthermore, I think "Karaoke Evenings" can get a lot more youths involved right from the start rather than a "Youth Band" which seems to have little direct benefit for the majority of the Local Youths that we all wish to help, in our own ways.

All best wishes

Kam

Hi Kam, I am awaiting a date from Ian Moore for 2006 to get a stall at the centre. CDEP will be undertaking detached youth work which will be drug education focused around Albion St & the Canada Estate in January with Time & Talents. We will also be encouraging Young People to hook into local services so this will be an excellent opportunity for us to promote the new Youth Club for the area. If you have any flyers or information to hand out we will be glad to distribute.

Attendees at the RYC Meeting on 30-11-2005 all wanted to help push this Community-Led RYC Project forward to secure the much needed "Youth Provision".  It is much hoped that the RYC Project will help "regenerate" the Albion Street Area, clear its "Bad Name" as a "Crime Hot Spot" and to be in a position to start drip-feeding "Good News Stories" to the General Public at the earliest possible opportunity.

1)    Premises

Southwark Housing will discuss with Mayflower Tenants & Residents Association to secure the use of its T&RA Hall for 2 Days a Week between Monday to Friday inclusively and to ascertain the cost of installing the necessary "Disabled Access" to meet with Health & Safety requirements.

The Canada Estate Music Club will continue to hold music training sessions on the Saturdays and to look out for further development opportunities as part of the RYC Project

2)    "RYC Project Board" :  9 Founding Members :  (b), (c), (e), (f), (h), (m), (p), (r), (s) as listed above plus a representative from Mayflower Tenants & Residents Association to meet on 15-12-2005 (Thursday) at Canada Estate Tenants & Residents Association Hall starting at 7:00pm

3)    Request for Suggestions of "Youth Activities" at Mayflower Tenants & Residents Hall

It was decided at the 30-11-2005 Meeting that the RYC Project should get underway without delay.  Everyone is cordially invited to submit to me suggestion of potential activities at the Mayflower Tenants & Residents Hall for the RYC Project for presentation and discussions at the RYC Project Board Meeting on 15-12-2005.   Some suggestions that have been raised at the 30-11-2005 meeting included a "Drop-In Centre" (with a Table Tennis Table & a Pool Table) and the potential provision of other activities like Music, Dance & Self-Defence Classes by Local Volunteers.

Please circulate the information to your other contacts and email me suggestion of "Youth Ativities" by the close of day on 9-12-2005 (Friday).  "Volunteers" to help provide "Youth Activities" are cordially invited to put themselves forward by emailing me your name(s) and a description of your qualification for the specific "Youth Activities" (e.g. Dancing, Martial Art) that are being volunteered.

As always, please let me know should you require further information.

All best wishes

Rotherhithe Community Council Deputation on 15-11-2005 (Tuesday) by Barry Duckett (Chair of Canada Estate Tenants & Residents Association) and Kam Hong Leung (RCSF) : To promote the proposed project to invite "Community Involvement" in terms of potential "ideas" for compiling the "Wish List" (e.g. "Rotherhithe Music Academy" - see next section below)  for fund-raising purpose and other much needed support for this important community-led self-help regeneration project.

ROTHERHITHE  MUSIC  ACADEMY  (Last Updated @ 21-12-2005)

Let's imagine a "Rotherhithe Music Academy" to help bring "Love, Hope & Faith" to the Albion Street Crime Hot Spot Area & the Rotherhithe Community at large.   Knowing that many Young People of Rotherhithe are keen on music and media, imagine what a well-thought out, well-funded and well-run community-led music-based project, both for leisure and to provide training/work experience that may lead to future employment, will do to help them focus their energy that will help make a positive difference to their lives and the others that they come into contact with.  Imagine the enormous potential benefits in having an established musician who lives in Rotherhithe to act as a "Teacher", "Mentor" and "Role Model" for the Young People of Rotherhithe who can benefit from having someone to give them a little bit of help along the way who is non-judgemental, genuinely care about their well-being and wants to work hard to help them acquire the self-respect, self-discipline, people and technical skills to live a happy, successful life.  Please  read Mike Parlett's email of 6-11-2005 below to find out more.

Subject: RE: Canada Estate Young People Music Project : Request for Donation of Musical Instruments

Hi Kam,

I would be delighted to help out if I can.

I have started successful community music projects in the past and am a qualified music teacher (PGCE) so if anyone has any ideas as to what I could contribute please let me know although I am not sure about obtaining musical instruments.

It would be great if we could get some kind of sponsorship from Southwark News or even Southwark Council to provide some funding for the young people.

I have been in the press quite a lot recently with my new album and have just done a DVD recording so may be good for Southwark News’s profile to be seen to be supporting such a project with myself as a tutor.  I think such a well thought out scheme would be an excellent idea for the community generally.

Please feel free to contact me and maybe we can have a meeting and check out my web site.  Maybe we could also get together at some point to discuss further.

Keep up the excellent work Kam!

Mike.

Kind Regards.
