Subject: Rotherhithe Safer Neighbourhoods Police Teams Launch Event in Southwark Park on the 25 May 2006 (Thursday) from 4pm to 6pm + "Rotherhithe Youth Club Project"

Dear Val & Fiona

Please see the email below from Cllr. Lisa Rajan.  I am pleased that Chief Inspector Chris Hafford has taken my suggestion for the event to have a strong "Music Theme" and that the new and fast-rising band, "The Horne", from Canada Estate will be performing and act as the "centrepiece" of the event.  I remember how the "Rotherhithe & Surrey Docks Crime Survey Follow-Up Working Group"  has talked at length about supporting the "Rotherhithe Youth Club Project" when we last met at the City Hall.  Barry Duckett, Steve Cornish and Rotherhithe Police (PC Richard Skinner and PC Gary Dark in particular) have all done a lot of good, hard work to help the "Canada Estate Music Club", including the £5,000 Rotherhithe Safer Neighbourhood Team Community Fund to help buy musical equipment.  It is a truly Multi-Agency "Community-Building" and "Community Safety" "Success Story".  Let's hope it will be a very successful event and may lead to new impetus and support for the Rotherhithe Youth Club Project.  Many thanks again for all your great help and continual support.

All best wishes

Subject: Safer Neighbourhoods Teams event

Dear All,

This Thursday, all the Safer Neighbourhoods Teams across the borough are being relauched at various events. The Surrey Docks and Rotherhithe teams are participating in an event in Southwark Park on the 25th May between 4 and 6pm. The officers in both teams will be there to meet local residents and discuss crime concerns, there will be a crime prevention stand and the Karrott bus too. There will be live music from "The Horne", so it should be a good event. Hope to see you there!

Best Regards,

Lisa Rajan

Subject: Update @ 5-5-2006 (Friday) : Rotherhithe Sector Safer Neighbourhood Police Team "Music Theme" Official Launch Event on 25 May 2006 (Thursday)

Dear Friends

Further to the various email correspondence last week, I have held brief meetings with Inspector Mark Johnson, Sergeant Al Irvine, Barry Duckett of Canada Estate and Jon Surtees of Southwark News on Thursday.  Please find below a Progress Update Report:

What We Want To Achieve :  To have a Lauch Event that is "do-able"  and "successful".  Rotherhithe and Surrey Docks were the 3rd that got the "Safer Neighbourhood Police Team" in Southwark, well ahead of some other wards in London which are stll waiting for theirs.  The "Canada Estate Music Club Project" (which is part of the bigger "Rotherhithe Youth Club Project") has received strong backing from Rotherhithe Police, both financially and otherwise.  The local band, "The Horne", has started from nothing only a few months ago to achieving public recognition and support, both locally and nationally.  This is a great "Success Story" for the "band" and their "helpers" which seem to have all it takes to make a wonderful "Role Model" to others of how the "Police" and the "Community" could/had work collectively and positively for our Common Good.  Furthermore, the project's potential in helping to "Regenerate" the "Albion Street Area" can only help to make it an even more compelling "Rotherhithe Community-Building Success Story".

What We Need To Do To Ensure A Successful Launch Event on 25 May 2006 :

A Launch Event with a "Music Theme" will take a lot of organisation and it is critical to get all the expertise and other help that we can get.  Mark will try to get Sergeant Roy Dawson or Sergeant Al Irvine to contact me later today for further discussions.  I am pleased to report that Barry Duckett has already had initial discussions with PC Gary Dark and they both seem eager to help.  Barry told me that many things seemed to have stood still because of Southwark Council Election yesterday but he will make further enquiries and to help rally support as from today.  Barry Duckett and PC Gary Dark reportedly prefer to use Mayflower Tenants Hall for this proposed event rather than Southwark Park Bandstand to minimise the risk that the Launch Event will be adversely affected by bad weather.

I have initially envisaged the proposed "Rotherhithe Sector Safer Neighbourhood Launch Event with a Music Theme" to have 2 main components : "Performance" & "Competition".  In view of the limited time we have to organise this event, it seems sensible and more "do-able" to focus our efforts in organising the "Performance" and drop the "Competition" - perhaps to revisit this "idea" another time in the future.

Which "Rotherhithe Musicians" To Invite To Perform At The Launch Event on 25-5-2006 :

a)     "The Horne" of Canada Estate  -  Barry Duckett to help organise ?

b)    "Rotherhithe Police & Rotherhithe Community-Builders Band" -  PC Gary Dark (Bass Guitar);  Barry Duckett (Drums); Steve Cornish  (Bass Guitar);  Sergeant Roy Dawson (???), Gary Magold (???)  .... I really like this "idea" and hereby invite suggestions/support from recipients of this email.

c)    "Other Rotherhithe Musicians" of different ages [e.g. Mike Parlett (Downtown Resident & International Brass/Jazz Musician) + Young Musicians of Rotherhithe Schools, ... ].  I hereby invite suggestions from recipients of this email.

I am pleased to report that Jon Surtees of Southwark News has been following our email discussions to date and hopefully, we can count on Jon and Southwark News for "Press Coverage" and "Publicity".  I am keen  to offer the proposed  "Launch Event" as an "Exclusive News Story" to Southwark News in recognition of strong and continual support over the years.

I will continue to keep you informed when I have furthers news and look forward to receiving any suggestions or pledge of support that you may care to offer.

Sergeant Roy Dawson & Sergeant Al Irvine :  I hope to speak/meet with you on 5-5-2006 (Friday) or on another day by 12-5-2006.  If I am on the phone/internet when you call, please leave me a voice mail or preferrably, email me.

Barry Duckett :  The 1st "Rotherhithe Safer Neighbourhood Steering Group Meeting" has been scheduled for 17-5-2006 (Wednesday) at Rotherhithe Police Station to start at 7:30pm.   Please lend your support to Sergeant Al Irvine and help "Spread The Words".

All Best Wishes

Subject: Rotherhithe Sector Safer Neighbourhood Police Team Official Launch "Music" Event on 25 May 2006 (Thursday) : Expression of Support from Chief Inspector Chris Hafford + Steve Cornish + Barry Duckett + Gary Magold

Dear Friends

A strong "Community" with "Caring" and "Giving" individuals who constantly look out for and help out each other has been one of the most important tools for combating "Crime" and the "Fear of Crime" throughtout the history of mankind.  To this effect, I am delighted to report the very prompt and positive support from the following four "Key Players" in support of RCSF's proposal to have "Music" as our chosen "Theme" for the official launch of "Safer Neighbourhood Police Team" for the "Rotherhithe Sector" on 25 May 2006 (Thursday) as detailed in my Proposal Email below of 27-4-2007 @ 6:15am:

1)    Chief Inspector Chris Hafford - Head of Safer Neighbourhood Policing in Southwark

Chris has accompanied Southwark Borough Police Commander Ian Thomas when his visited Russia Dock Wood soon after the top-level "Rotherhithe Community Policing Strategy Meeting" on 5 June 2003 that led to the beginning of Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum ("RCSF").

2)    Steve Cornish :  Chair of Downtown Defence Campaign ("DDC"); Chair of The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland; Vice Chair of Rotherhithe Angling Club ("RAC") and Southwark Council's Civic Award Winner) who has long been helping to improve "Community Safety" and "Youth Provisions" in Rotherhithe.

3)    Barry Duckett :  Chair of Canada Estate Tenants & Residents Association; Vice Chair Rotherhithe Area Housing Forum; Founder & Chair of Rotherhithe Angling Club ("RAC"); Chair of The Friends of King George's Field and Southwark Council's Civic Award Winner) who has long been helping to improve "Community Safety" and "Youth Provisions" in Rotherhithe.  (see Barry's Email below of 27-4-2006 @ 11:31am)

4)    Gary (Steven) Magold :  Secretary of The Friends of Southwark Park who loves music and has well-established track record of success in organising "Public Concerts" as clearly demonstrated in the attached 1-page poster for "Southwark Park Bandstand Summer Concert 2006".  (see Gary's Email below of 27-4-2006 @ 11:18pm)

It is my sincere hope that we can all work together and invite other individuals/groups to join in our collective efforts to help make the official launch of "Safer Neighbourhood Police Team" for the "Rotherhithe Sector" on 25 May 2006 (Thursday) a great success and to  send out a "Loud & Clear Signal" that the "Rotherhithe Community" has a lot of talented, skillful, caring and giving individuals who work relentlessly to fight "Crime" and the "Fear of Crime".  I can think of no better way to acheive this very ambitious and important goal by getting as many "People of Rotherhithe" to "Get Involved" in helping to organise as well as attending this launch event.  I believe it will be very helpful if "The Horne" of Canada Estate as reported in my Proposal Email below can give a public performance together with other "Rotherhithe Musicians" and invite all their fast-growing fans and other supporters, especially the Rotherhithe Youths that frequent the Albion Street Area to come along and join in the fun as well as our continual "Community-Building" efforts.  There would have been no Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum ("RCSF") without Commander Ian Thomas and the "Rotherhithe Community Policing Strategy Meeting" on 5 June 2003.  I believe the proposed "Music-Therme Launch Event" of the "Safer Neighbourhood Police Team" for the "Rotherhithe Sector" on 25 May 2006 (Thursday) will make a wonder "Farewell Gift of Goodwill" to Ian Thomas who will soon move on to take up one of the biggest policing jobs in London.

The good, hard work of Steve Cornish, Barry Duckett and Gary Magold are well known in the Rotherhithe Community.  I would hereby encourage Rotherhithe Police to contact them direct as they see fit.  Other recipients of this email who would like to help organise or contribute (financially or otherwise) to the proposed "Music-Therme Launch Event" of the "Safer Neighbourhood Police Team" for the "Rotherhithe Sector" on 25 May 2006 (Thursday), please let me know or contact Rotherhithe Police (Inspector Mark Johnson (Head of Rotherhithe Police Sector), Sergeant Roy Dawson (Head of Surrey Docks SNT)  or Sergeant Alastair Irvine (Heaad of Rotherhithe SNT)) direct using the "RCSF Contacts List".

I am most grateful for all the support received to date and let's continue to work positively and collectively for our Common Good.

All best wishes

Kam

Subject: Re: Rotherhithe Sector Safer Neighbourhood Police Team Official Launch Event on 25 May 2006 (Thursday) : RCSF's Suggestion of "Theme" for Community Event

Hello Kam,

Thanks for your e-mail, I'm sure that I can talk to the members of the Friends of Southwark Park as well as Russ Dryden and Phil Burkett of Bermondsey Beat (who programme the main stage at the Bermondsey Carnival) about being involved and assisting with putting something on the bandstand in the park. As you know we already have eight (small scale) Sunday afternoon dates throughout summer, but if "we all pull together" something could be achieved, and to me the bandstand is a great place and where better to showcase local talent to the local community.

Of course pulling in the resources is a different matter, especially with licensing, Insurance, power and all associated with an event.

Let me know if you want me to put this to those I've mentioned.

All the best!

Gary.

Subject: Southwark Police + Barry Duckett + Steve Cornish : Rotherhithe Sector Safer Neighbourhood Police Team Official Launch "Music" Event on 25 May 2006 (Thursday)

Chris :  Many thanks for your kind email below and I look forward to hearing from Inspector Mark Johnson.  One great attraction of a music event for the Rotherhithe Sector launch is that it is likely to reach out to many people of very diversified backgrounds. There seems to be People of Rotherhithe who have musical interest and skills who are happy and willing to help.  Furthermore. PC Richard Skinner and PC Gary Dark have already worked with Barry Duckett & Steve Cornish on the "Canada Estate Music Project" over the last few months with proven success - a much desired "Community-Building Success Story" that we have all been hoping for the Albion Street Area and in Rotherhithe at large. I was very pleased to receive the email below from Barry Duckett who has kindly offered his help.

Barry :  Thank you very much for your email below and kind offer of help.  Steve Cornish also seemed keen to help the police organise this launch event for the benefits of the residents of Canada Estate / Albion Street and beyond.  Hopefully we can find other People in Rotherhithe to help make it a truly Rotherhithe Sector-wide launch event to ensure its success. I believe what the "Rotherhithe & Surrey Docks Residents Crime Survey 2004/5 Follow-Up Work Group"  set out to achieve was good and the police launch event may provide a golden opportunity to tell other people of the success to date and to help build on the "Canada Estate Music Project" by attracting talented helpers and funding.  I will keep you and Steve Cornish posted as soon as I have further news and encourage Rotherhithe Police to make direct contact with you and Steve as they see fit.  I will be very busy when I start my new job on 15 May 2006 which may involve up to 80% of travelling. If time allows, perhaps some of us can meet before 14 May 2006 to kick off this exciting project.  I am copying this email to the other members of the "Rotherhithe & Surrey Docks Residents Crime Survey 2004/5 Follow-Up Work Group" .

All best wishes

Subject: Rotherhithe Sector Safer Neighbourhood Police Team Official Launch Event on 25 May 2006 (Thursday) : RCSF's Suggestion of "Theme" for Community Event

Dear Chris

I was pleased to see you again at the Surrey Docks Safer Neighbourhood Steering Group Meeting yesterday and I thought we had a very constructive meeting.  I am writing in response to your request at yesterday's meeting for suggestions of a "Theme" for the official launch of the Rotherhithe Sector Safer Neighbourhood Police Team that will form part of Southwark Borough-wide official launch on 25 May 2006.  On behalf of RCSF, I would like to propose a "Rotherhithe Community Music Festival & Competition" which I believe will meet the following two key criteria:

1)    To achieve maximum "Public Interest" & "Community Involvement", preferably also with a strong focus on successful means of combating "Youth Crimes" which seem to remain a "Rotherhithe-specific" challenge.

Rotherhithe Police and other groups and individuals have done a lot of work on the "Rotherhithe Youth Club Project" that was an "idea" first put forward by Barry Duckett, Chair of Canada Estate Tenants & Residents Association as a "Community-Led Initiative" to combat "Youth Crimes" in Rotherhithe as a whole, especially in the Albion Street Area, that was unanimously backed by Val Shawcross AM and all other attendees at the "Rotherhithe & Surrey Docks Residents Crime Survey 2004/5 Follow-Up Work Group Meeting" at London City Hall on 2-11-2005.  One of the activities that have been vigorously pursued and promoted was the "Canada Estate Music Club Project" and the former "Rotherhithe & Surrey Docks Safer Neighbourhood Police Team" has not only offered a lot of much appreciated "Practical Help" but also secured some £5,000 funding that has been used to purchase some much needed musical instruments for the local band, "The Horne" which has achieved a lot of success in recent months according to the attached Southwark News Report titled "Horne into Band Final" that was published last Thursday.  As part of the "Community Payback", "The Horne" gives music lessons to local youths on the Saturdays which reportedly is attracting fast growing interest - especially after their recent successes.

Please visit the two below-listed categories of the RCSF Website ( http://spaces.msn.com/rotherhithe ) for further information:

a)    Rotherhithe Crime Statistics & Survey :  See "Rotherhithe & Surrey Docks Residents Crime Survey 2004/5 Follow-Up Work Group Meeting" at London City Hall on 2-11-2005.

b)    Rotherhithe Community Notice Board :  See "Rotherhithe Youth Club" (including "Rotherhithe Music Academy").

2)    To strive for a "Win-Win Option" that will be effective for the 1-day official launch, provide other immediate benefits for all involved and offer potential opportunities for future developments to our collective efforts in combating "Crime" and the "Fear of Crime" in Rotherhithe.

Many Rotherhithe Youths love music and welcome the opportunities to get involved.  What I have in mind is for the event to be a combination of "Music Performance" and "Music Competition" and I will herewith address each in turn in more details:

a)    Music Performance

To invite "Rotherhithe Musicians" to perform in public, say at Southwark Park Bandstand, perhaps to include:

-    "The Horne" (Canada Estate, Rotherhithe Ward) - which may welcome the publicity to help promote their music career.

-    "Mike Pallett" :  The international brass musician who lives in Downtown, Surrey Docks Ward

(See Websites :  www.parlett.net    and   www.talentinternational.com )

-    Other "Rotherhithe Residents" & "Rotherhithe Community Service Providers" & Friends :  For example, Steve Cornish, PC Gary Dark of Rotherhithe Police and Ritchie Humphries (Community Drugs Education Project) as Bass Guitarists and Rotherhithe Community Warden  Goodwin (?) as Vocalist.

b)    Music Competition

I would suggest for two categories ("Individuals" and "Groups") ; two age groups (say "Up to Age 18 Group" and "Above Age 18 Group") and two groups of music competition ("Singing" and "Musical Instruments").  Target participants to be Rotherhithe School Pupils, ...

I have briefly discussed this proposal with Steve Cornish (Chair of Downtown Defence Campaign & Chair of The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland) last night who is happy to lend his support.  If you like RCSF's suggestion, I would strongly recommend to invite Southwark News (Kevin Quinn and Jon Surtees in particular) to get involved, especially for publicity and to help attract participants for the "Music Competition".   Perhaps "Rotherhithe Businesses" like Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, BL Canada Quays Ltd. may be approached to seek sponsorship, etc.  It is my hope that if there is enough "Public Interest & Support" for more music activities in Rotherhithe, especially for the Rotherhithe Youths, a "Rotherhithe Music Academy" may turn from a "Dream" into a "Reality" one day for our Common Good.

Today is my last working day at my current employer and I will have two weeks off before starting my new job on 15 May 2006.  Please let me know should you wish to discuss my proposal before then.  I am copying this email to a few contacts for their information and to invite their comments and suggestions.

All best wishes

Kam

Subject: Meeting with Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair on 6 September 2005 (Tuesday) : Rotherhithe & Surrey Docks Ward Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team

Dear Friends

Thank you very much for the most interesting and helpful meeting yesterday with Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair.

I have publicly declared at our meeting yesterday that Rotherhithe Residents seem to like our recently formed "2-in-1" Rotherhithe & Surrey Docks Ward Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team a lot but we would like to see them patrolling the Streets of Rotherhithe when we think we really need them to protect us and our properties.  It is my understanding of the current arrangement that our Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team does not work after 10pm during the weekdays and only works one every three weekends which has caused very serious concerns to some Rotherhithe Residents - especially in view that many "Trouble-Makers", real or potential, seem to be generally active between 10pm to around midnight, just after the current pub closing time and over the weekends.

In response to Ian's totally unexpected and extraordinarily kind offer to investigate the potential need for the extension / rescheduling of working hours and staffing requirement of the Rotherhithe & Surrey Docks Ward Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, please find attached five documents which I have promised to send Ms. Jen Bishop and Inspector Lee Padgett :

Attachment (1) :    A Group Photo taken with Inspector Lee Padgett, the chief organiser of MPA's Public Consultation, inside the main entrance of New Scotland Yard yesterday, 6-9-2005 (File Name : MPA 2005 Consultation (1))

Attachment (2) :    A Southwark News Report on the door-step-interviews of Sir Ian Blair and Police Minister Hazel Blears in Rotherhithe, South East London on 3-11-2003 as part of Home Office's national publicity campaign to launch the Government's public consultation of delegating more decision-making powers on Local Policing to Local Communities (File Name : Police & Minister Visit (3-11-03)).

Attachment (3) :    Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum ("RCSF") :  Origin, Founding Principles & Terms of Business + Local Intelligence Report Template (File Name : RCSF Terms of Business)

Attachment (4) :    Rotherhithe Young Crime Watchers ("RYC") Scheme Poster (File Name : Rotherhithe Young Crimewatchers)

Rotherhithe is infamous for "Youth Related Problems".   The RYC Scheme was launched on 5-5-2005 to help empower the Young People of Rotherhithe - "Turning Victims into Champions".  This poster can be seen prominently displayed at some highly important strategic places like Underground Train Stations (Canada Water & Surrey Quays), Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, Surrey Docks Health Centre and Local Schools & Churches.

Attachment (5) :    A copy of the Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum ("RCSF") Circular of 6-9-2005 @ 3:56am attached below.  The "Recipients List" clearly demonstrates a truly "Multi-Agency Partnership" for combating "Crime" & "The Fear of Crime" and a quality collection and comprehensive representation of the People of Rotherhithe (Residents, Visitors and Workers) and our Community Safety Service Providers and other helpers which counts Val Shawcross AM (GLA Representative for Lambeth & Southwark and Chair of London Fire & Emergency Planning Authority), Jenny Jones (GLA Green Party Representative),
Southwark Borough Police Commander Ian Thomas, Head of Southwark's Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, Chief Inspector Chris Hafford; Southwark Borough Fire Commander Andy Reynold,  Lewisham Borough Fire Commander David Smith,  Managers of Rotherhithe Police & Rotherhithe Community Wardens, Southwark Councillors & Southwark Council's Strategic Director for Environment & Leisure, Gill Davies; Rotherhithe Business & Community Leaders and our Local Press, Southwark News, as key members and other helpers.

Sections (2a), (5b) and (5c) of the RCSF Circular of 6-9-2005 below give everyday examples of the types of crimes and other anti-social behaviours in Rotherhithe.  I would like to bring your attention to Section (4) below that contains an extract of the comprehensive GLA-led "Rotherhithe & Surrey Docks Ward Residents Crime Survey Report" ("Crime Report") - especially Key Action Point (b) of the "Conclusions & Recommendations Section" that formed the basis of my discussion with Ian yesterday.  Please let me know should you wish me to send you a hard copy of the Crime Report.  Alternatively, the report can be downloaded via Val Shawcross's Website (http://www.valshawcross.com) by the end of this week.

It is my understanding that Sir Ian Blair has requested his Staff Officer, Mr. Moir Stewart, to speak with Southwark Borough Police Commander Ian Thomas following our discussions yesterday.  In the interest and spirit of effective communication, I have already spoken with Val Shawcross AM and Inspector Mark Johnson (Manager of Rotherhithe Police) directly yesterday to update them accordingly.  I am copying this email to some of my Key Contacts to keep them informed.

As always, pleased let me know should you require my assistance.  I look forward to working further with Metropolitan Police to help build a safer, more caring and more giving Rotherhithe Community where people will want to live, visit and work.

All best wishes

Kam

Dear Kam,

I’m doing very well, thank you. Today is cloudy and it looks like it’s about to rain, so I’m afraid that the summer is drawing to a close. Other than that, I can’t complain about anything. Healthwise it’s all good and I’m working (even too much, if you ask me!). I’m swimming twice a week in the evenings plus on Saturday. I’d like to take a quick trip to London but right now my balance of days I can take off is zero, or even negative...

How are you and Béatrice? And how are Mr. and Mrs. Platt?

I wish you all the best and I hope to be able to see you again in the near future. Take care,

Manuel

Hi Kam,

Thank you very much for your e-mail. You are right, we have never met but judging from your e-mail and from the opinion that John and Wiko have of you, you must be a very nice person.

I'm OK now and I feel normal, with the exception of three very small things: my fingers on my right hand, my voice, and my sight. My thumb and index finger move on their own and that makes my whole right hand shake a little bit, so I can't write and do things like that, I even use my left hand to send text messages with my mobile phone!

They say that the reason why I can't speak normally yet, could be one of  three things: the tubes that they put in my mouth and throat for me to breath and eat could have affected my vocal cords, or the left side of my tongue and other muscles could be weaker because I didn't move my whole left side for a long time, or it could be the remains of a bruise that I have between my cheek and my bone. I tend to agree with the last option because I  feel something like a bruise on the top part of my cheek and my mouth feels as it's full there.

I'm also a bit frustrated by my sight even though it's better than it was  before. My eyes are ok and I've got 20/20 on both of them but when I look with both eyes I've got some problems. First I used to see two different pictures, then just one picture but it was all foggy and now I see normally with the exception of a corner on the bottom-left, where it's still foggy.

My balance was also a problem (I couldn't even walk) but it's much better now and I walk on my own and I go up and down the stairs. I even tried running, a week or so ago!

I don't remember anything from the attack and I don't remember anything from that day at all. I remember everything from the day before though, but nothing from the morning of the Sunday. I don't remember anything from the hospital in London, I remember something from the plane transfer and then I don't remember anything until the last few weeks (maybe two or three) that I spent in the hospital here. I don't remember Mr. and Mrs. Platt, but my parents and my sister were my eyes during that time and they told me about them. Mr. and Mrs. Platt also sent me a card that I still have and that I read, once I was able to read and understand. Do you happen to have their e-mail address, by any chance?

Of course I don't think badly of all of you, I know that there are mainly good people in the community and I still remember that, about a year ago, two next-door neighbours offered to let me borrow their tools to do some gardening. That fact struck me because it didn't happen to me anywhere else in London, or in any large town/city.

I keep in touch by e-mail almost daily with John and Wiko and I talk to them on the phone every once in a while. They are very nice and they have been extremely nice during this period, even sending me sweets and other gifts.

Also, do you have the address, e-mail address, or phone number for the lady that was there with her daughter and for the gentleman who was helping me, by any chance? If you do, is it possible for me to have them? I would like to thank them...

I might come to London, with my parents and my sister, towards the end of the month. if I do, I will inform you and maybe, if that's ok,  we can arrange to meet somewhere, I would like that.

Yes, you may give my e-mail address to anyone who may wish to contact me and please, tell everyone that I wish to express my gratitude.

Thank you again for everything,

Manuel

Dear Friend

We have never met in the traditional way and perhaps we never will.  However, our lives have crossed path on that bright Sunday evening when the your unfortunate attack happened in Russia Dock Woodland that has caused you to be hospitalised for months and shook the Rotherhithe Community to the core.  I was busy with gardening some 100 yards from where the attack took place and ran over as soon as I saw you fallen and your trusted American friend, John was desperately trying to help you.  When I reached the scene, you were in a real bad state.  You were unconscious, in convulsion and with blood coming out of both your nose and mouth.  Thankfully, a gentleman was already kneeling on the ground attending to your medical need.  Since he seemed to know what he was doing and doing a much better job that I could, I have instead tried to make myself useful by helping John to secure emergency medical help that you obviously needed.  A mother and her very young daughter were watching over you when I arrived at the scene.  The little girl around age 6 was clearly in distress watching you and I have tried to encourage her mother to take her away.  However, the mother refused to go and told me that she was sure that your mother, sister, girlfriend .... no matter where they were at the time must be deeply worried about you and she wanted to do whatever she could to help you and your family.  I can tell you that this genuine and unconditional care for you have soon spread widely within the Rotherhithe Community.  Since we could not ALL phone the hospital to monitor your progress on a daily basis immediately after the attack, we have nominated Mrs. Patricia Platt to represent the community to keep tap on your recovery and to feedback the latest news.  Pat and her husband have brought some flowers to visit you at King's College Hospital when you were still in a coma and you have remained in our thoughts and in our daily prayers for a very long time.

I was very pleased to see your trusted friend, John, last week who told me the brilliant news that you have now made remarkable recovery.  You might have already heard that a "Witness Video Parade" has taken place at Southwark Police Station last week and the police investigation seems progressing well.

I, on behalf of the Rotherhithe Community, would like to hereby send you our collective goodwill and best wishes for your continual recovery.  I am copying this emails to some Local Residents as well as Local Politicians..... to advise everybody of the latest good news regarding you.  There have been a lot of very positive development in the Rotherhithe Community following your unfortunate attack (e.g. Mobile CCTVs  and Motor Vehicles Barriers in Russia Dock Woodland, more physical police presence, including the introduction of Rotherhithe Police Community Safety Officers.......).  Not surprisingly, the Rotherhithe Community has collectively chosen the crime black spot in Waterman Walk where it is joined to Lady Dock Path in Russia Dock Woodland as the very first spot for the testing of Mobile CCTV which is currently taking place.  You will be fondly remembered by many in the Rotherhithe Community and I sincerely hope that your unfortunately attack will not cause you to think badly of ALL of us.  Many of us have fought long and hard for a very long time to improve community safety for the decent majority and in some ways, you have acted at least as one of the much needed "catalysts" that helped to bring about some of the recent positive changes that benefit us in the Rotherhithe Community.

I did not wish to disclose your personal e-mail address to the general public.  However, I will forward to you any well wish messages that I may receive on your behalf that may result from this message.  Please let me know should you wish me to pass on your personal e-mail address to those who may wish to contact you direct.

All Best Wishes

Subject: Rotherhithe Young Crimewatchers ("RYC") Scheme : RCSF's "Turning Victims into Champions" Self-Help Initiative + "RYC Information Poster" + Southwark News on 12-5-2005 (Thursday)(Target Publication Date)

Dear Friends

Reasons for Launching "Rotherhithe Young Crimewatchers ("RYC") Scheme"

The unfortunate and unexpected high number of incidents of "Youth Gang Problems" have caused concerns to many People of Rotherhithe of all ages.  Some Rotherhithe Youths are too frightened to go out and their mothers ask them to have pre-set telephone number(s) on their mobile phones for contacting the police in case of emergency.

I have for sometime been looking for an opportunity to further strengthen our "Local Intelligence Network" by tapping into the vast pool of knowledge and energy of the Rotherhithe Youths and I felt the moment has finally arrived for Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum ("RCSF") to help launch a "Rotherhithe Young Crimewatchers ("RYC") Scheme".  Effectively, "Turning Victims into Champions" to help build "A Safer, More Caring & More Giving Rotherhithe Community where People will want to Live, Visit and Work."

Purposes of the "RYC Poster"

1)    To introduce The RYC Scheme and invite the much needed "Public Support" for combating "Crime" and "The Fear of Crime".

2)    There seems to be a general misunderstanding among some Rotherhithe Residents regarding who to call regarding crimes under different circumstances.  Consequently, the Poster Campaign aims to target and empower the Rotherhithe Youths by giving them three specific telephone numbers to call for "emergency", "non-emergency" and "anonymous" reporting of crimes.

Reason for Targeting "Rotherhithe Youths"

In addition to the reasons stated above, Rotherhithe Youths are amongst some of the most vulnerable members of the Rotherhithe Community which traditionally has a relatively high-proportion of "Youth-Related Crimes".

What You & Yours Can Do to Help Promote The "Rotherhithe Young Crimewatchers ("RYC") Scheme" ?

Please help to tell EVERYONE in Rotherhithe, youths, their parents, grandparents, god parents, teachers, neighbours, even "Young Troublemakers" - if it is safe to do so - by "Words of Mouth", circulating/displaying the attached "RYC Poster".  The more people and organisations we "collectively" succeed in getting to support The RYC Scheme, the better chance we will have in reclaiming Rotherhithe for the "Decent Majority".

What "RCSF" Will Do Next for "The RYC Scheme" ?

1)    Southwark News on 12-5-2005 (Thursday) - Target Publication & Official Launch Date

Rather than trying to rush excessively via Southwark Weekender that is to be published tomorrow, our most supportive and trusted Media Friends at Southwark News will instead try to help publicise and promote The RYC Scheme and its Poster Campaign next Thursday.  Please check it out.

2)    RCSF's Potential Joint Initiative :  RCW Scheme Launch + Poster Campaign

I have spoken with Inspector Mark Johnson (Rotherhithe Police) and Phil Murphy (Southwark Council) yesterday who have in turn discussed "The RYC Scheme" and the proposed "RYC Poster" with their colleagues and other contacts.  There is a possibility that a "Joint Initiative" will be launched in the near future with the full support and authority of The Safer Southwark Partnership

The reason for the circulation of this email and attached "RYC Poster" is to make an initial quick and hopefully, helpful and powerful response to the unfortunate "Youth Gang Incidents" over the May Bank Holiday Weekend and help to empower EVERYONE to better prepare for the forthcoming weekend starting tomorrow as well as the fast-approaching School Summer Holiday Season !

3)    Public Display of "RYC Posters"

I will personally try to get some "RYC Posters" displayed publicly in Rotherhithe, like the three Underground Train Stations (Canada Water, Rotherhithe & Surrey Quays), Tesco Superstore, ..... bearing in mind to make sure that I must avoid "Fly-Posting" which is an "Environmental Crime" !

All best wishes
