Dear Kam,

I know it is a bit last minute, but I would be grateful if you would post this information about a special service we are holding.
On the 7th September 1940 the blitz began, the first day of 54 of consecutive days of bombing. Rotherhithe was hit very hard on that first day with much of it set alight. Holy Trinity Church was also destroyed in the first few minutes of the raid. So the service is very much a community one, but as we recall the past it is important that we reflect on the present also.

Thanks Kam

Fr. Andrew

Subject: Photo Report : Lavender Pond's Winning of "Local Nature Reserve" Designation Celebration + Launch of Rotherhithe Peninsula-Wide Wildlife Project on 10 June 2006 (Saturday)

Dear Friends

We had a bright sunny day for the event that has attracted "volunteers" both from Rotherhithe and beyond at the different sites as detailed in the email below of 13-5-2006.  Please see attached two photos for your information and potential use:

One photo was taken at Lavender Pond Nature Reserve with, appropriately, a "Resident Grey Heron" as the center of attention among lush vegetation of different varieties.  Reportedly, the fish stock is thriving in the eco-friendly Lavender Pond which is also a designated "No Fishing Area" in Rotherhithe.

The other photo was taken of the newly named "Redriff Bridge" in Russia Dock Woodland with the healthy-looking and flowering Iris close to Redriff Primary School and Surrey Docks Health Centre, with the newly erected "sculpture" designed by the pupils of Redriff Primary School and hand-crafted by Kevin Boys, the Resident Artist Blacksmith of Surrey Docks Farm.

Southwark Council and Volunteers have done a lot of good, hard work to help make Rotherhithe a better community for all to live, visit and work.  Let's wish for continual success of Lavender Pond Nature Reserve, Russia Dock Woodland, Stave Hill Ecological Park and the Rotherhithe Peninsular Wildlife Project.

As always, please feel free to use the attached photos as you see fit without the need to seek my prior consent.  Should you wish to receive copy of the photos that are of higher resolution (up to 900KB file size each) and of better quality, please let me know.

All best wishes

Kam

Dear Friends

Just in case you have not been informed otherwise, I am writing to let you know that on Saturday 10th June 2006, BTCV and the Trust for Urban Ecology ("T.R.U.E.") will be celebrating volunteering and wildlife in Rotherhithe with the designation of Lavender Pond as a new "Local Nature Reserve", and the start of the "Rotherhithe Peninsula-Wide Wildlife Project". This exciting event will form part of BBC’s "Breathing Places Campaign" that aims at helping people to make a real difference to wildlife in their local neighbourhood.

Please see below an extract from the BTCV's News Release for your information.

Please join in the celebration, lend your support to the wildlife project and help "Spread The Words".

BTCV’s News Release                Friday, 12 May 2006

BTCV is the UK’s largest practical conservation charity. Founded in 1959, we help over 140,000 volunteers every year to take hands on action to improve both the rural and urban environment.

NEW LOCAL NATURE RESERVE FOR SOUTHWARK

On Saturday 10th June, BTCV and the Trust for Urban Ecology will be celebrating volunteering and wildlife in Rotherhithe with the designation of Lavender Pond as a new Local Nature Reserve, and the start of the Peninsula Wide Wildlife Project. This event is part of the BBC’s Breathing Places, a campaign aimed at helping people to make a real difference to wildlife in their local neighbourhood.

Activities will include:

The construction of a Reed bed nursery at Lavender pond.

This is the start of a major programme to plant up the docks and waterways of the Rotherhithe peninsula to create a peninsula wide wildlife haven only two miles from the City of London.  Reed beds encourage a wide variety of birds including Reed Warblers and Reed Buntings and provide shelter for dragonflies.

The Clearance and planting of the Waterways in Russia Dock Woodland.

The waterways cascade down through Russia Dock Woodlands providing sheltered fishing for Kingfishers and Herons. Through the years the waterways have silted up.  Once cleared, planting Reeds and Water lilies will help to keep these waters healthy and full of life.

Constructing the Stave Hill Ecology Centre

Stave Hill Ecology Centre is a green building made from recycled timber and built by local volunteers. There will be a wildflower meadow roof with special habitat features to encourage endangered bumblebees, roosting bats and the rare Black Redstart.

Lavender Pond Nature Park was created in 1981 to provide a haven for wildlife, an amenity for local residents and an educational resource.  The Park is set in the northern part of the former Surrey Commercial Docks, once the centre of Britain's timber trade. It was created on the site of the former Lavender Pond, a large expanse of shallow water where timber was floated to prevent it from drying and cracking.  The present Lavender Pond recalls the type of wetland habitats that once extended for many miles along the banks of the Thames.

Ben Dewhurst, Manager of TRUE, said: “Lavender Pond Nature Park has been providing  Southwark residents with a place to enjoy nature for 25 years. The designation of the park as a Local Nature Reserve is great news for Southwark residents interested in their local environment, and we are hoping  that many of them will be able to join us to celebrate.”

Anyone interested in getting involved in the project can call Ben Dewhurst on 020 8293 1904.

Can I also ….. pass on congratulations to all those involved in the efforts to make the Festival the grand success it was. Everyone I spoke to enjoyed themselves thoroughly and it seemed to run very smoothly. The Festival is a wonderful way to celebrate so many aspects of Rotherhithe - long may it continue to run.

Dear Friends

This year's Rotherhithe Festival that is bigger (and we hope even better) than before is fast approaching.  Please find herewith 2 "hot-off-the-press" posters with details of the first ever "Rotherhithe Music & Arts Festival" that will be based in Russia Dock Woodland for your information.  There will be plenty of events and activities in other parts of Rotherhithe throughout the day starting at 11:00am, hopefully something for everyone.  Further information can be obtained from :

1)    Festival Co-ordinator, Suzy Russell (E-mail: rotherhithefestival@yahoo.co.uk) (Mobile: 07798 922 607)

2)    Southwar News and Southwark Weekender

3)    Southwark Council (Tel:  020-7525-2000)

Request for "Volunteer Stewards"

Some 20+ "Volunteer Stewards" still need to be recruited for the RDW and Mellish Field Sites on 16-7-2006.  On behalf of Rotherhithe Festival Group, I hereby request for your help.  Volunteering can offer a wonderful opportunity to make a positive contribution to the Rotherhithe Community.  For example, to play an active role in the first ever "Rotherhithe Music & Arts Festival" which we hope will be a lot of fun and a day that we will fondly remember in years to come.  Please see the email below from John Hellings, Vice Chair of Rotherhithe Festival Group, with detailed description of what is involved.  Please offer your support and help "Spread The Words".

Subject: Re:Rotherhithe Festival, ground cleaning, stewards, Safer Neighbourhood meetings

Dear Kam,

Thanks for your latest mailings and I hope you are well.

The Rotherhithe Festival Group is meeting fortnightly in public these days at Sands film studios in St Marychurch Street, by The Mayflower and the church. Our next meeting is to be on Monday 19th of June, starting at 6.00 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

We are hoping to adopt a new Constitution at the next meeting, and having got that out of the way, we will be discussing in detail all the exciting events that the Festival will be offering.

The main venue is to be Russia Dock Woodland and one thing we do need as part of our public entertainment licence, is to have 20 volunteer Stewards on duty at any time throughout the day-long Festival.

So we really, really need volunteers to put themselves forward, and we need to get people's names and contact details as soon as possible. We wondered if it would be possible to ask you to publicise and appeal for volunteers through your RCSF newsletter?

All it will involve is to be prepared to patrol the two venues, Russia Dock Woodland and Mellish Field, or specific venues within the two sites, like the Marquees where the stallholders will be, or the RSPCA and dog team area, or the music stage, or where the catering vans are, or the circus area, or the football games area etc, for 2 hours at some point during the day of the Festival, and be helpful to the public, keep an eye on things, and report any problems that may be occurring.

We would like to draw up a Rota of Stewards so everyone would know when they were meant to be "on duty", and I would be responsible for co-ordinating all the Stewards and helping out wherever needed.

All volunteers will be fully covered in terms of insurance and legal liabilities by the Rotherhithe Festival Group's licence and insurance and we only want Stewards to simply be visibily present for a couple of hours of their time, and be helpful to the public, as the ambassadors of Rotherhithe.

So we would appeal to you if you could publicise this cry for help through your RCSF newsletter.  All contact, particularly any volunteers, with the Rotherhithe Festival Group should be to the Festival Co-ordinator Suzy Russell at this e-mail: rotherhithefestival@yahoo.co.uk and mobile 07798 922607.

Yours sincerely,

John Hellings, Vice-Chair, Rotherhithe Festival Group

Hi Kam, hope all is well. I heard about the festival and yes it would be great to have a stall there. Do you have a contact name and details to book a stall? If so please forward it to me.

We are moving to the Docklands Settlement in Rotherhithe Street this month so feel free to drop by any time.

Many thanks

Suzy :  I am pleased to report that the "Collective Support" for Rotherhithe Festival 2006 is growing rapidly as you can see from the emails below - a wonderful and timely "positive" build-up for the important Public Meeting on Monday, 24 April 2006.

Al :  Thank you very much for the "Good News" email below and I am most grateful for your positive response and support.  Steve Cornish is working hard to try to get the British Army to organise some event(s) and recruitment drive on the day as an attempt to help provide "Positive Role Models" and "Employment Opportunities" to the Rotherhithe Youths, especially those who are "At Risk", to help keep them on the "Straight-&-Narrow" and "Make it Fun" for all.  Let's continue to work positively together and to keep each other informed in our collective efforts to help build a safer, more caring and more giving Rotherhithe Community where people will want to live, visit and work.

Ritchie :   I remember that you have recently been looking for opportunities to set up stall in "busy" public places in Rotherhithe to promote "Drugs Education".  Would CDEP be interested in lending support to the forthcoming Rotherhithe Festival on 16 July 2006 (Sunday), the biggest annual public event in Rotherhithe, a golden opportunity to get the anti-drugs message across to a large number of  "People of Rotherhithe" from all walks of life ?

Andy :   Thank you for your kind email below and very positive response to my invitation to participate in this year's Rotherhithe Festival.  Commander Smith has sent a Fire Engine and a Fire Crew to lend support to the Rotherhithe Bike Magic Day on 4 March 2006 which was very well received and appreciated as you can see in the attached photo.  I trust the Rotherhithe Festival 2006 Steering Group will be delighted to have the high profile support of LFB and an opportunity to promote "Fire Safety" in the Rotherhithe Community.

Suzy :  My apology for not being able to attend next Monday's Public Meeting which I hope will be a great success.  I have requested for LFB and Rotherhithe Police to lend support to Rotherhithe Festival 2006 as you can see in the emails below.  I would be most grateful if you can lend them your assistance as and when required.

Kam,

Thank you for making the requested changes.

In regard to the Rotherhithe   festival I’m sure it is an event that we can make a positive contribution toward. Unfortunately I can’t get to the meeting on the 24th.

I notice that Dave Smith from Lewisham has been included in the circulation so I will be liaising with Dave to make sure we have a coordinated response. I have  also copied in  Terry  Vialls, the station manager at Dockhead  fire station ( Dockhead  fire station covers a significant  portion  of  Rotherhithe) and will be discussing  with Terry and Dave  how  the  LFB  can support the event whilst at the same time getting our fire safety messages across.

Dear Andy

Thank you very much for your email below.  Congratulations on your new appointment and I wish you success in your new role.  I have just updated the "RCSF Email Group Distribution List" as you have requested.

Knowing that LFB is keen to promote "Fire Prevention" in accordance with the "London Safety Plan",  I wonder if Southwark Fire Service and Lambeth Fire Service may like to take advantage of the forthcoming Rotherhithe Festival on 16 July 2006 (Sunday), the biggest annual public event in Rotherhithe, to promote "Fire Safety".  If so, please see the emails below for further information.

I look forward to working with you to help promote Community Safety in Rotherhithe and please let me know should you require my assistance.

Subject: Rotherhithe Safer Neighbourhood Police Team ("RSNT") : Publicity & Promotion of the new RSNT + Rotherhithe Festival Public Meeting on 24 April 2006 (Monday)

Dear Al

Welcome to Rotherhithe and I hope you will enjoy your new role leading the RSNT.

Thank you for  your email below and responding to my invitation.  It is my understanding that Rotherhithe Police always had a stall at the Rotherhithe Festival for "Crime Prevention Promotion"  and "Public Relation" purposes.  I am sure the organisers of Rotherhithe Festival will warmly welcome the active participation of the RSNT and that will no doubt be mutually beneficial.  Southwark News has always been a strong supporter and active promoter of the Rotherhithe Festival which included the publication of a very informative and helpful multi-colour "Visitors' Guide".  It may be useful for RSNT to make direct contact with Southwark News to discuss your potential participation at this year's festival and to try secure some "Press Coverage" regarding the recent important re-organisation of the Safer Neighbourhood Policing of "Rotherhithe Ward" and "Surrey Docks Ward" that is of great "Public Interest".

I have given Commander Ian Thomas my words at the "Rotherhithe Community Policing Strategy Meeting" on 5-6-2003 that I will do my utmost to help promote the all-important 2-way communication process that led to the start-up of the "Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum ("RCSF").  I am changing job at the moment and next week will be my last week at my current employer company which will be very hectic and I will not have time to attend the Rotherhithe Festival Public Meeting next Monday.  For your information, please see listed below some named individuals who are likely to be at that meeting who may become useful contacts for you in your new role if you do not yet know them already.  I am copying them on this email to request them to lend you and the RSNT their support.

1)    Suzy Russell - the 2006 Rotherhithe Festival Co-ordinator

2)    Rebeka Clark - Manager of Stave Hill Ecological Park, 1st Southwark Woman of The Year (Community Involvement Category) + Chair of 2006 Rotherhithe Festival Steering Group

3)    Andy Bonnici - Deputy Centre Manager of Surrey Quays Shopping Centre + Treasurer of 2006 Rotherhithe Festival Steering Group

4)    Jan Goodfellow - Director of Time & Talents + Vice Chair of 2006 Rotherhithe Festival Steering Group

5)    Steve Cornish - Chair of Downtown Defence Campaign, Chair of The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland + Vice Chair of Rotherhithe Angling Club

6)    Kevin Quinn - Co-Editor of Southwark News

7)    Jon Surtees - "Rotherhithe Reporter" of Southwark News

8)    Barry Duckett -  Chair of Canada Estate Tenants & Residents Association + Vice Chair of Rotherhithe Area Housing Forum + Chair of Rotherhithe Angling Club

I too look forward to meeting you in person and to welcome you to the Rotherhithe Community.  I have initially planned to attend the RSNT's first Steering Group Meeting scheduled for 17 May 2006 (Tuesday) at Rotherhithe Police Station starting at 7:30pm.  However, I am unlikely to attend that meeting for I plan to start my new job on 15 May 2006 and I may not even be in London that week.  Should you be attending the Surrey Docks SNT Steering Group Meeting next Wednesday,  26-4-2006, perhaps we can meet there.  Please feel free to contact me should you require my assistance.

Southwark Council Community wardens have been granted new powers to tackle anti-social behaviour, after becoming the first local authority officers in Greater London to be accredited by the Metropolitan Police.

The increased authority will give the wardens five new powers to tackle issues on the spot without relying on a police presence. The changes mean wardens now have the power to request the name and address of anyone committing anti-social offences. Such offences include those that cause injury, alarm and distress to other people.

Wardens will also have the right to confiscate alcohol and cigarettes from underage drinkers and smokers and people drinking in designated public places.

Chris McCracken, Head of Service, said: Our wardens made 13,350 intelligence reports last year, containing information which led to arrests, ASBOs and convictions. These new powers will improve the ways in which we share information and allow the police more time to focus on serious crime. The fact that we are the first local authority in London to be accredited shows our determination to make a difference in the local community, and our commitment to a close partnership with the police.

The powers, under the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme within the 2002 Police Reform Act, allow accredited persons to deal with specific nuisances such as dog fouling, cycling on the pavement, and littering.

Eighty seven wardens received Accredited Person status from Southwark’s Borough Commander in a civic ceremony held at the GLA building this Wednesday, April 15.

Southwark’s Borough Commander, Wayne Chance, said: "I am delighted that, in my first week as Borough Commander, I have been able to congratulate so many of Southwark's Community Wardens on achieving their community safety accreditation. Keeping people safe within Southwark is a joint responsibility and involves many partners and communities.

Southwark Community Wardens are integral to this and they are now even better equipped to make Southwark even safer. Southwark wardens are the first in London to be accredited and they should be very proud of their achievements."

A  LITTLE  BIT  MORE  BITE

Southwark News on 16 April 2009 - Editorial

It's high time that Southwark's community wardens were given some teeth.

Ok, it's been billed as five new powers, but in reality it boils down to being able to request someone's name and address and being allowed to confiscate alcohol and cigarettes from young people and those drinking in public places. So more a case perhaps of a set of dentures, rather than a pair of gnashers that are really going to bite.

In reality, community wardens have always been caught between two stools - that of a fully trained police officer and that of the old estate caretakers. And this means that public support for wardens has been lukewarm at best. All of us would take more police on the streets any day of the week, while many hark back to ‘the good old days’, when caretakers knew exactly who was doing what and when - and didn't need permission to ask a young tearaway what his name was.

But the world has changed since then and, whilst there is still a decent argument for bringing the caretakers back, wardens can still play an active part in reassuring the public, and helping the police by being their eyes and ears when Met budgets just don't stretch (and never will in all likelihood) to blanket policing.

It can't be an easy job - nowadays there is a worrying possibility that confronting a gang of youths about underage drinking will get you more than just verbal abuse in return. And without the powers of the police, if wardens are met with silence or unhelpful culprits who refuse to give their names or hand over their booze and fags, then there's not an awful lot more they can do, except call the police - who will be too busy to attend such a minor incident.

Nevertheless, the 'five' new powers are a step in the right direction. For every ten offenders who tell wardens where they can stick it, there will be one who does hand over the alcohol in a public place, one who gives their name after acting antisocially or causing injury or distress, and a young person who hands over the alcohol and cigarettes they shouldn't be consuming. And that makes for a more enjoyable environment for all of us.

Couple this to the impressive statistics revealed by Southwark's warden boss, Chris McCracken, that the wardens made 13,350 intelligence reports last year and the case for keeping our wardens, and giving them powers to make them even more effective, becomes compelling.
