Dear Chris & Kevin

Thank you for the news report and your editorial on  Commander Ian Thomas in Southwark News of 6 April 2006 and the many other Southwark News reports over the years, two of which I have referred to in my proposed Reader's Letter below for your consideration.   I have decided on the title "A Hard-To-Forget Police Commander" to play on words and as an attempt to match the title of your editorial.

I hope you will like my proposed Reader's Letter (480 words) below, RCSF's "Farewell Gift of Goodwill" to Ian, and choose to publish it.

All Best Wishes

Kam

"A Hard-To-Forget Police Commander"

I was pleased to learn that Ian's talents and achievements have been recognised and rewarded with the offer of one of the biggest policing jobs in London to head up the Met Police's CO11 Division that deals with large scale public events on reading "Police Commander Leaves Job" and "A Hard Act To Follow" in Southwark News of 6 April 2006.

Without Commander Ian Thomas, there would have been no Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum ("RCSF") that was founded at the "Rotherhithe Community Policing Strategy Meeting" on 5 June 2003 during which the attendees discussed the best ways forward to combating "Crime" and the "Fear of Crime" all of which would be very difficult, if not impossible, without “Public Trust” and effective “2-Way Communication”.  Commander Ian Thomas asked me at the end of that meeting to go and tell the People of Rotherhithe that he will help clean up crime in Rotherhithe and I offered in return to set up and run the RCSF to help build a "Local Intelligence Network".

Commander Ian Thomas means business and is a pleasure to do business with who backs up his words with actions.  "Commander Gets Tour Around Rotherhithe" (Southwark News of 17 July 2003) to find out first hand the various anti-social behaviours that have blighted the "Quality of Life" in Rotherhithe by talking with Local Residents in the affected neighbourhood.  When anti-social youths ran riot at Albion Channel, Commander Ian Thomas not only sent more police to tackle the problem but has led a "Police Blitz" himself that really put fear in the young trouble-makers which quickly ran for cover at the first sight of Commander Ian Thomas and his police troop.  When Home Office promoted a high profile new nationwide policing initiative to actively empower local communities in our collective fight against "Crime" and the "Fear of Crime", Commander Ian Thomas brought Police Minister Hazel Blears and the then Met Police Deputy Commissioner Ian Blair to visit Local Residents in Rotherhithe ("Police Minister Pays A Visit To Rotherhithe Woodlands" in Southwark News of 6 November 2003) that helped won national recognition for community safety efforts and successes in Southwark via BBC TV News Broadcast the day after the visit and a News Report Video Clip of that VIPs' visit can still be accessed by the public via the BBC Web Site.

Commander Ian Thomas has been a powerful and much needed "Catalyst for Change" that has helped made a "Positive Difference" to the daily lives of the People of Southwark and has himself been transformed in the process.  RCSF wishes Commander Ian Thomas the very best of luck for his new, big job and Ian can rest assured that he will remain in our hearts and we will do our utmost to help ensure that all his good, hard work will be continued and be built upon in years to come.

Dear Chris & Kevin

Thank you for choosing to publish my proposed Reader's Letter, "Winning Southwark Cyclists" on Page 10, your kind acceptance of the title for its intended "Dual Meanings" and gave your extra support in naming it "Letter of The Week".  I hope my Reader's Letter will help to highlight the amazing contribution and achievement of Southwark Cyclists (ably led by Barry Mason), Southwark Police, Southwark Council, Decathlon Sports & Leisure Megastore and the others involved in a truly "Multi-Agency" approach to help make Rotherhithe/Southwark a better community for everyone.  I hope it will also help provide further "Food for Thoughts" of the many benefits of "Cycling" and help generate the much needed collective will & support, financial and otherwise, to help turn what I have understood to be one of Southwark Cyclists' latest initiatives of starting a "Bicycles Club for Local Kids" a reality and soon ........

I ran into Rebeka Clark, Southwark's "Woman of The Year (Active in the Community Category) 2006", this morning while she was cycling to work at Stave Hill Ecological Park.  Rebeka told me that one of the local youths who is serving "Community Service Order" at Stave Hill Ecological Park has read about Rebeka winning her hard-earned and well-deserved award in Southwark News and has reportedly treated Rebeka even more respectfully than before.  A wonderful real life story of the "Power of The Press" !

Many thanks again for the strong, continual and much appreciated support of Southwark News.

All best wishes

Kam

Dear Chris & Kevin

Thank you for the three most interesting news report in Southwark News on 9-3-2006 that I have referred to in my proposed Reader's Letter below for your kind consideration.   I have chosen the title "Winning Southwark Cyclists" with the intended dual meanings of writing about "Southwark Cyclists that are Winners" as well as how to "Win more converts to become Southwark Cyclists".

I hope you will like my proposed Reader's Letter below and choose to publish it.

All Best Wishes

"WINNING  SOUTHWARK  CYCLISTS"

There have been many recent "Good News Stories" regarding cyclists in Southwark.

A BIG congratulation to well-known and well-respected eco-friendly cyclist, Rebeka Clark, Manager of Stave Hill Ecological Park who has been voted the first Southwark's "Woman of the Year" (see "Eco Inspiration Is Named The Woman of 2006" on Page 16 of Southwark News on 9-3-2006) and collected her hard-earned and well-deserved award last Wednesday.

Rotherhithe Bike Magic Day (see Page 18 of Southwark News on 9-3-2006), a free 1-day public event at Canada Water on 4 March 2006 (Saturday) was an outstanding success for the organisers, sponsors, the celebrity stunt bike riding team and the hundreds of a highly diversified group of attendees of different ages, ethnic origins and local residency - 250 of which have registered their bicycles on the day to help combat "Bicycle Theft" under the "Immobilise Property Crime Scheme" [ (Website:  The following link opens in a new windowhttps://www.immobilise.com/  ) (Tel: 08701-123-123) ] which covers "Mobile Personal Properties" including Mobile Phones, Personal Computer & Stereo Systems, iPods & Digital Cameras - much to the delight of the Safer Southwark Partnership (Southwark PoliceSouthwark Council, ...) which was a strong supporter of this multi-agency event.

Volunteers from Southwark Cyclists [ (Website :  The following link opens in a new windowhttp://www.southwarkcyclists.org.uk/ ) (Mobile : 07905-889-005 (Barry Mason, Co-ordinator) ) ] were out in force to offer free advice and other help about the event, cycle routes, training and security.  The "Local Easy Bike Rides for Everyone" were well attended and covered various local attractions including the Thames Path, Russia Dock Woodland, Southwark Park and Surrey Docks Farm where some visited for the first time.  Some Peckham BMX Club Members were reportedly very pleased and moved by their first sighting of Tower Bridge.

The three 1-hour breath-taking performance sessions of the Stunt Bike Riding Team led by Rich Johnson (Website: www.rjrideguide.com) has surely impressed the spectators and got many young people talking and thinking seriously about taking it up as a hobby.  Bicycles seem perfect substitutes for motorcycles and are more affordable, eco-friendly and above all, "legal" to use in Southwark.  Could that be one of "Leisure Activities" which deserves to be more actively promoted for healthy living for EVERYONE and may even provide one of the much needed "Diversionary Activities" to help combat the wide-spread malice of Reckless & Anti-Social Riding of Motorcycles ("RAMs") that are causing problems and headache to thousands of People of Southwark ?

The benefits of cycling in terms of health, sports & leisure, ecology, environment and economy are well understood by many.  I have learned first-hand on the Bike Day the powerful "Community-Building" effect of cycling which can be enjoyed in private or with other people - fellow cyclists and spectators alike.  Some organisers were pleasantly surprised to see attendees from all walks of life and from some parts of London that allegedly would never have otherwise set foot in Rotherhithe to join in the fun which helped to break down barriers and bring people together for our common good.  There is little wonder that cycling is actively promoted by Southwark Cyclists and the likes of Southwark Council and Greater London Authority (Valerie Shawcross AM, GLA Member of Lambeth & Southwark and Chair of London Fire & Emergency Planning Authority sent a Fire Engine from Deptford Fire Station to attend the Bike Day to give free Fire Safety Advice and guided tours of the Fire Engine;  Jenny Jones AM, Green Party Member with London-wide responsibilities sent her good wishes for the Bike Day and said that she would love to have attended were it not because of her prior engagement).  The proposed "Bridge to East London" (see Page 6 of Southwark News on 9-3-2006) for cyclists and walkers that will link Rotherhithe with Canary Wharf will go a long way to further promote cycling in Southwark and so will other practical measures that make cycling safer, more accessible and more enjoyable for EVERYONE.
